Veramaris is a 50:50 joint venture of DSM and Evonik for the production of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA from natural marine algae. Located in Delft, the Netherlands, Veramaris was launched in 2018, because its parent companies shared a vision: to conserve marine life by using a resource the ocean provides – natural marine microalgae. Producing an algal oil rich in the two essential omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA through large-scale fermentation at its facility in Blair, Nebraska, USA, Veramaris enables partners along the value chain to become independent from wild-caught fish and meet the growing demand for animal protein responsibly.
Please provide any details you would like to share about the product that you are developing for the Challenge.
Veramaris produces the two essential omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA from natural marine algae for animal nutrition. Our sustainable technology could be a complete replacement for fish-based ingredients for a variety of species. By combining expertise in cultivating natural marine algae with know-how in industrial-scale fermentation, we have developed an innovation that transforms feed nutrition. With the help of natural marine microalgae, we bypass the natural food chain of the oceans. Our omega-3 from microalgae is an ideal high-quality alternative to fish-based ingredients for sustainable animal nutrition. Feeding Veramaris omega-3 oil directly to animals helps protect marine habitats and conserve the biodiversity of our oceans.

Two By Sea (sometimes typed as TwoXSea) is a sustainable seafood wholesaler located on Pier 45 of historic Fishermen’s Wharf in San Francisco. Since 2009, we have been sourcing 100% traceable seafood harvested and grown by small-scale fishermen from the U.S. West Coast. We know all of our captains and farmers personally and are tirelessly devoted to fairness and transparency in our business practices. Known for our commitment to quality, TwoXSea sells to many of the top Bay Area and Portland, Oregon restaurants, markets, and fish mongers.
Please provide any details you would like to share about the product that you are developing for the Challenge.
Several years ago with the help of fish nutrition scientists, TwoXSea developed the world’s first and only plant-based fish feed that is void of fish meal and fish oil. We have been working to perfect the feed ingredients ever since at McFarland Springs Trout Farm where we raise rainbow trout. Consisting of many regionally sourced ingredients, such as nut meal and nut oil, and super nutritious algae, we have developed a product for the F3 Challenge that uniquely eliminates the need for wild fish in the diet of farmed fish without sacrificing an ounce of nutrition for fish. The end product is a vibrantly colored fish that is higher in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids than fish raised on conventional feed.

Just as the F3 Challenge seeks to improve existing systems and processes for producing food for people, we believe educating consumers on the importance of our oceans and the food we harvest from it rests on the shoulders of those of us who sell and present these precious marine resources.

Since its formation in 2002, ZeaChem has continued to progress its biorefining technology advancing from lab based R&D through research center based pilot and on to demonstration based operations building out a portfolio of biorefining IP, physical assets, and commercial opportunities. ZeaChem has 34 published patents around its core C2 & C3 bacterial fermentation technology. ZeaChem has built and operates a multi-million dollar, 10 bone dry ton per day input, 250,000 gal per year ethanol or equivalent biochemical output, demonstration plant in Boardman, OR. ZeaChem is actively engineering its 1st Commercial project, which will be located adjacent to the demonstration plant and is continuously developing a portfolio of projects that will follow behind Boardman throughout the United States and around the world. Each component of ZeaChem – Technologist, Technology Institute, Project Developer – compliments and drives the growth of the other. ZeaChem built the plant in Oregon to demonstrate its core technology platform at scale. ZeaChem opened the plant as a technology institute to third parties, which has created two profoundly beneficial outcomes. First, the third parties who come and work at the demo plant are able to dramatically accelerate the scale up of their own technology at a fraction of the cost to building and owning a plant of their own. Second, it has created foundational relationships for mutually beneficial project development activities at its 1st Commercial plant in Boardman and around the world.
